Detective #27 facsimile

© DC Comics

If someone had told me back in 1974 that there would one day be a global "Batman Day", it would have blown my mind. And if someone had told me that one day I'd own a facsimile of Detective #27 almost indistinguishable from the original, my mind would have been similarly blown.

Well, last week, both of those predictions came true, when a new facsimile of Detective #27 turned up in my pull list at my local comic shop, to celebrate "Batman Day". And what a facsimile it is.

The comic in question is printed at original Golden Age size - not like the thick, yet modern-comic sized, recent DC facsimiles, and not as large as the DC Famous First Editions of yore. This comic is original size, with a matt-finish cover (not glossy), with interior pages being a very good substitute for flimsy newsprint, with accurate colours. It knocks all other facsimile reprints into a cocked hat.

The photos of the interior below render the interior page colours a little too brightly, and the pages actually have a slight brownish tinge to them to approximate the age of a well-preserved comic.

Well done DC!

  1. I want one of those, B - where do I get one? Forget that, just send me yours. Looks great.

    2. Excellent fast work, Kid. I was totally unaware that this particular facsimile was on the horizon, so it was a nice surprise that my LCS had put one by for me. Hopefully DC will continue to reprint future Golden Age facsimiles in the right size with thin paper inside. I read that more facsimile Treasury Editions are on the way from DC, as well.
So you have secured two copies, eh? I hope that doesn't mean you're succumbing to being a speculator.

    3. No, but when affordable, I prefer to have a 'back-up' copy just in case of accidents.

    4. Looking at your photos again, B, the margins seem a bit tight. Guess I'll have to live with it though.

    5. Received mine today, B - very nice to have.

    6. Meant to say, B, the cover is a combination of matte and gloss. The red background of the title is gloss, other parts are matte.

    7. Yes, it's very nice. I haven't seen a comparison published anywhere of it side-by-side with an original Detective #27, but I've seen a comparison of size with a subsequent issue which seemed to indicate that the facsimile was perhaps slightly oversized by 1/8" to 3/16" on both dimensions. Nonetheless, I think DC have a lot of care into the reprint.

    8. Earlier I Google-searched the dimensions of Golden Age comicbooks and the sizes given were the same as this facsimile. However, I've seen other facsimiles of other GA mags and they're usually slightly smaller by the numbers you state. Shame one of the ad pages was reproduced too large and was nearly cut off at the open end.

  2. Meant to ask you, was getting the Corgi Batmobile everything you thought it'd be, nostalgia-wise, and have you got it on display? Why not do a post on it?

    1. Thanks for the nudge, Kid. When the facsimile Batmobile arrived, I took a very quick look at it and then closed the box up, to be reopened on Christmas Day. It’s currently sitting in our TV room between my Eaglemoss Batmobile (as seen in Detective 408) and the Eaglemoss Batcopter (as seen in Detective 421). I will do a blog recounting my memories of Christmas Day 1966 later this month., to include a discussion of the Corgi Batmobile replica. Truly a pivotal point in pop culture for this impressionable lad :-)

My blogging has been limited lately - first a post-Thanksgiving lay-up with a heavy cold or Covid(the test was inconclusive) and now a trip to Blighty for a week to visit relatives, old pals and a side trip to the British Library outpost in Yorkshire to review their pulp collection for my research on the Atlas Publishing & Distributing Company. I’m falling behind on the Atlas Publishing history blog as well, but that’s due to delays incurred in tracking down reference materials.

  3. Received my matte black Batmobile today (Friday), B, so I'll try and put it up on my blog in a day or two.

    1. Great, Kid. I'll keep an eye out for it. I don't believe that I ever saw a matte black version of the Batmobile - will be interesting to see the comparison.

    2. Merry Xmas, B - and the matte Batmobile is now up on my blog.

    3. Just took a look, Kid, and added a comment. Merry Christimas to your good self. It's still early here, so am surreptitiously typing this as the family awakens.

    6. Posted the matte and the gloss cars side-by-side, B, but unless you're viewing them on a normal sized screen, you won't see much difference - mobile screens are pointless, so you'll have to click on the photo (on a decent laptop) to enlarge it to see the cars properly. Having said that, I'll maybe try taking a daylight photo so that the flash doesn't wipe out any detail.

    7. I've now replaced the new photo with a better one, taken 20 minutes or so ago.
